Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Mesquite Owner’s Guide

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear has produced a long run of gate and barrier operators under several series names, and the welding and fabrication work we handle in Mesquite covers most of them. We see the most weld-related failures on the Linear MegaCode swing-arm operators, the Linear VS-GSLG and APeX series swing and slide gate units, and the older Linear LSO line that still turns up on Mesquite properties built in the 2000s. The mounting brackets, gate attachment points, and steel posts are the parts that crack or tear before the motor itself fails.

The label matters. On the side of the operator housing there is a silver or white tag with the model number and often a serial number. Photograph it before you call anyone. We match fabrication to that series because the arm geometry and bracket hole spacing differ between, say, a VS-GSLG and an APeX. A bracket that looks close but is off by a quarter inch will bind the arm and destroy the new gear set inside a year.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Linear manufacturers will not sell direct to a local shop like ours unless a distributor is involved, and many of the original stamped brackets are now only available through clearance channels at inflated prices. For most Mesquite jobs, a properly fabricated steel replacement, matched to the existing hole pattern and powder-coated, outlasts the factory stamping. Where an OEM part is genuinely superior, usually on hinge pins or machined components, we will say so and order it. Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags visibly at the latch side. Most of the time the weld at the bottom hinge post has cracked or the hinge leaf itself has begun to tear. The operator keeps working, which masks the problem until the misalignment burns out the limit switch.
• A sharp metallic creak or pop when the gate starts moving. That sound is steel shifting against a broken weld or a bracket flexing at a crack. It will not heal. In Mesquite’s summer heat, the steel expands enough that the pop becomes more frequent by August.
• The gate stops halfway and the operator strains or reverses. A bent swing arm or a broken attachment point changes the travel geometry. The motor is fighting an angle it was never programmed for, and it will either stall or strip the gear.
• Rust staining at a weld joint or hinge. Surface rust is cosmetic. A rust line that bleeds out from under a weld means moisture got inside the joint and is working outward. That weld is cracking from within.
• The operator mounting plate has pulled away from the post. On concrete or brick columns in Mesquite, the wedge anchors fail over time and the plate bends under the weight of the moving gate. This calls for fabrication as much as any torn bracket.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check yourself: photograph the label on the operator housing, measure the gap under the gate at both ends, and look for visible cracks at the hinges and mounting points. That information helps any shop quote faster and more accurately. What we do not recommend: cutting or welding on an automated gate while the operator is still connected to power, or propping a sagging gate with wood and hoping the weld will hold. Gate steel under tension stores enough energy to move suddenly, and a grinder near a charged operator arm is not the kind of story anyone wants to explain to an ER nurse in Mesquite.
