Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Mesquite Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Mesquite typically runs between $165 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad module, rewiring the intercom run, or swapping a failed control-board relay. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads and intercom parts on the truck, so most Mesquite calls are same-day. The way homeowners usually find us: the gate opens fine from the car remote, but the keypad outside stopped taking codes around the same time the intercom started crackling or went silent. That’s not two separate problems. It’s usually one wiring fault or one surge-damaged board feeding both.

Vance Gate Repair Mesquite is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ghost Controls. We repair and replace their parts because we’ve worked on enough of them to know exactly which revision is in front of us before we touch a wire.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls has used a few keypad and intercom configurations across their line. The keypads we service most in Mesquite are the Ghost Controls keypad modules paired with the AXP-series boards, plus the earlier GXP-1 and GXP-2 revision boxes. Identifying what you have matters more than the model number on the motor: look for the small flat keypad with a surface-mount backplate, and check whether the wiring enters through a grommet at the bottom or the back. That tells us whether it’s a first-revision unit or a later sealed unit.

The intercom side is trickier. Ghost Controls intercoms are not universally cross-compatible: a unit wired for the AXP board will not reliably talk to a GXP-era board without a relay adapter, and installing the wrong revision causes the gate to hang at half-open or ignore the keypad until power is cycled. We carry both revisions and the adapter on the truck. For owners who ask about aftermarket keypads: we’ll install a quality aftermarket unit when it matches the board voltage and dry-contact spec, but we stock OEM Ghost Controls keypads as the default because their contact layout is consistent and the backplates fit the existing mounting holes.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad or Intercom Is Failing
  • Keypad lights up but nothing happens. The membrane is registering presses, but the dry-contact relay on the control board isn’t closing. In Mesquite humidity, oxidation on the relay terminals is a common culprit, especially on gates installed before 2018.
  • Intercom buzzes or whines through the speaker. That’s a failing capacitor on the intercom board, not the speaker itself. It gets louder when the sun heats the metal housing, which Mesquite gates do for a good part of the year.
  • Codes work intermittently, mostly after rain. Water migration into the keypad housing has corroded the contact trace. The keypad will test fine on dry days and fail after a steady Mesquite downpour. The fix is a sealed replacement, not a cleaning.
  • Gate opens from the intercom but not from the keypad, or vice versa. The control board is fine and the wiring is fine, but the input channel for one device has burned. This usually follows a lightning-adjacent surge or a power-wash session aimed at the gate post.
  • Visitor can hear you, but you can’t hear them. The intercom’s microphone lead has separated from the board or the mic capsule has failed. We see this on gates where the intercom face is exposed to west sun and heat year after year.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Mesquite, a Ghost Controls keypad replacement installed runs $165 to $260. An intercom replacement runs $220 to $340. When both need replacing because they share a wiring fault or surge damage, expect $320 to $420 for the pair, installed. The range depends on whether the existing wiring can be salvaged, whether the next-to-gate run needs to be re-pulled, and whether the board needs a matching input module. The written price is handed to you before any work starts, under Haven Standard Clause 1. That price is the price. It includes the part, the labor, the setup, the code programming, and the photo record of the finished work.

Every Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair we install carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we make it right at no additional charge. We’ve always quoted a number and landed within a few dollars of it. That’s the way Adrian Vance ran commercial access-control sites starting in 2014, and it’s the same habit on residential driveways off Gus Thomasson Road or over near Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things before calling: confirm the keypad’s blue indicator light is on, and confirm the gate motor itself still works from the main control button. Low-voltage keypad and intercom wiring is not high-tension work like a spring or a cable, but it can still bite: a miswired relay can send 24V back into a control board and take the board out with it. If you’re opening the intercom box and see corrosion, cracked capacitors, or wiring that someone crimped with pliers, stop there.

What goes wrong in DIY on these units is almost never the mechanical swap. It’s the board-side wiring: wrong input, wrong common, or crossing the keypad ground with the intercom audio ground. That mistake burns the board channel and turns a $220 keypad job into a $600 board replacement. If you’re comfortable identifying the exact Ghost Controls revision and you’ve already opened the box and photographed the terminal strip, call us anyway. We’ll bring the right part the first time, and you get a written price before we start. Call (469) 916-7097.
